Students will participate is workshops that emphasize Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education (CRSE) that include topics, such as racial justice, gender equity, LGBTQIA+ advocacy, differing abilities, ethnicity awareness, social class, religious tolerance, bullying, sexual harrassment, implicit bias, stereotypes, and microaggressions.  The workshops will engage students in perspective taking, self-regulation skill building, mindfulness, and building empathy.  We will measure the number of students participating in the Social Justice Institute's (SOJI) programming on a monthly basis beginning in October (2022) through May (2023) with the goal of having a 50% increase from the 100 students participating from the previous school year.

The Avanti staff will use the Social Justice Institute workshop participation data from the previous school year (2021-2022) as a baseline of the participation rates in the 2022-2023 school year.

The Avanti staff will use the ELA (SBAC), Math (SBAC), and Science (WCAS) data collected from the 21-22 school year as a baseline for student growth.

  •  ELA proficiency (SBAC) will increase by an additional 3% from 89.8% to 92.8% by the end of the 2025 school year

  • Science proficiency (WCAS) will increase by an additional 10% from 47.1% to 57.1% by the end of the 2025 school year

  • Staff will continue to require writing and reading skill development in all classes.  Student will be provided with a six-trait writing model refresher. (2.1)
  • Staff will continue to engage students in close reading and socratic seminars to promote literacy and communication skill building. (2.1)
  • Staff will continue to provide students with multiple opportunities for edits, revisons, and retakes to demonstrate mastery (2.1; 2.8)

  • Staff will continue to find innovative ways to include movement in classes. Yoga, and mindfulness will be offered in Art and Literature classes. Also, staff will be exploring the possibility of offering a bicycling program in the spring as the gym will no longer be accessible due to remodel construction. (2.6; 2.8)
  • All students will engage in career and college preparation using Naviance.  Students will complete a resume, portfolio, and explore career and higher education options prior to graduation. (2.5)

  1. Results from the 2022 Fall Panorama Survey will drive staff interventions and support.  Supports will provided weekly throughout the school year during Advisory times, Mindfulness and Yoga classes, and in meetings with the Counselor and Advisors.
  2. Staff will track the number of referrals (social-emotional) to the Counselor, Social Worker, and Sea Mar Therapist.
  3. Staff will meet to discuss all students social-emotional health on the last Friday of each month of the school year.

1.  All students in Social Studies will be measured each quarter (every 10 weeks) utilizing Classroom Based Asessments (CBA).  All students will be required to complete a CBA as a means towards earning credit in Social Studies classes

  1. Staff will review the level of student participation in Naviance during Advisory on the last day of each month between October 2022 and May 2023.
  2. Staff will the assess the progress of students in their classes each month and provide feedback to students and families to students that are falling behind in reaching mastery in their classes on the last day of each month between October 2022 and May 2023.
  3. Advisors will evaluate the Service Learning hours completed by the students in their Advisory on a quarterly basis (November 2022; February 2023; April 2023; and June 2023) during the 2022-2023 school year.
  4.  Arts Apprenticeship Pilot Program participants success rates will be tracked and the program assessed for sustainability each quarter (November 2022; February 2023; April 2023; and June 2023).  An overall program assessment will occur in June 2023 by the Principal, Program Coordinator,and the sponsoring teacher.

Baseline:
Staff will use cumulative data from the previous year as a baseline for the 2022-2023 school year.  The Arts Apprenticeship Program is a pilot that has no previous data, so we will being using "0" as baseline for sucessful number of participants this school year.

  1. Staff will engage 100% of students in Naviance's interest inventory tool by the end of October, 2022.
  2. Staff will provide 100% of students opportunities to work towards mastery on all assignments using a 4 pt. scale of assessment, creating a culture of retakes, redos, and revisions.
  3. 100% of students will be required to participate in Service Learning opportunities by the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
  4.  6 students will participate in the Arts Apprenticeship Pilot Program each quarter throughout the 2022-2023 school year with a goal of 24 students being provided an opportunity to gain real-world experience with a master artisan and imagine the possibilities of choosing Art as a vocation.

Year 3 Goal:
1. By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, at least 74 Avanti students will have successfully completed the Arts Apprenticeship Program.

  • Avanti staff will participate in OSPI sponsored Mastery Based Learning Collaborative, spending the next two years refining their collective efforts in competency based assessment and Culturally Responsive Sustaining Educational practices (5.1; 5.2)
  • School will sponsor an Arts Apprenticeship Pilot Program for Art students to gain vital real-world vocational experience with master artisans in the Olympia community (5.4)
  • Staff will continue to engage students with a focus on helping students use their minds well; high levels of personalization; student-centered learning with the teacher as a coach; empasize depth over breadth; a tone of decency and trust as a value; and with a commitment to non-discriminatory and inclusive policies, practices, and pedagogies. (5.1; 5.2; 5.3) 
  • Staff will survey students in the fall (September 2022) about social justice topics of interest then continue to engage students in courageous conversations about race, racism, and the institutions that support both. (5.1)
  • Staff will continue to allow student choice and voice in their educational experiences in classes (ex. Inquiry-based projects).  (5.4)
  • Staff will continue to support a classroom culture of mastery learning where “F’s” and “0’s” are not grades, they are viewed as a starting point in the process of redo’s, retakes, and revisions resulting in the intentional promotion of a growth mindset, hope, and resiliency. (5.2) 
  • Staff will continue to provide leadership and team-building opportunities for students high interest areas such as:  Art Club; ASB; CISPUS (if able); Haunted School; ED Camp; Envirothon; Avanti Cafe’; Outdoor Adventure Club; Bowling Club; Theater/Drama; WE Day; Madison-Avanti Giving Garden; Garden Crew; student-started Avanti Climate Action Club,  Craft Club, and more.   • Staff will continue to engage students in Service Learning activities on campus, in the local community, and with national non-profit organizations throughout the school year. (5.3)

  1. Staff will track on-time course completion rates of students engaged in our interdisciplinary block classes that have significant levels of project-based learning.  The data will be collected quarterly (November 2022, February 2023, April 2023, and June 2023). 
  2. Staff will track participation rates of students engaged in campus-wide student exhibitions and community service projects.  The data will be collected quarterly (November 2022, February 2023, April 2023, and June 2023).

Baseline:
A baseline will be established on student engagement using the participation rates within our interdisciplinary block classes. The data that will be tracked is on-time completion rates for those classes for the first two grading periods (November 2022 and February 2023).  The second of which ends on February 4, 2022.  We will use the data collected from the 2020-2021 school year as a baseline and compare it with the relevant quarters from the 2021-2022 school year.

  • Staff will continue to refine plans for implementing a scope and sequence for project-based interdisciplinary learning cohorts.  The cohorts will be comprised of teachers from three disciplines and will be team-taught, modeling the power of teamwork, and students will be engaged using interdisciplinary modules that by design intentionally require students to solve complex real-world problems.   • Staff will continue to develop and expand programs that promote environmental sustainability and Food Justice, including Natural Resources; Environmental Science; Plant Biology; Sustainable Agriculture; Experiential Education, Health, and Urban AG (Radish). (6.3)
  • Staff will continue to provide students with opportunities to promote food security through participating in community partnerships with Madison-Avanti Giving Garden; Kiwanis Food Bank gardens; Thurston County Food Bank / Kiwanis FoodBank Gardens.  (6.1; 6.3)        
  • Staff will continue to provide students will hands-on activities that engage them in their natural environment with community partners such as South Sound Green; testing water quality and local streams and rivers. (6.1; 6.3)
  • Staff will continue to engage students in partnerships with local Native American tribal elders and experts from the Squaxin and Nisqually tribes.  Staff will continue to implement the Since Time Immemorial (STI) curriculum and work with the district’s Tribal Liaison. (6.1; 6.2; 6.3; 6.4; 6.5)
  • Staff will engage students in local education conferences such as The Evergreen State College’s annual GREEN conference and High School Math Meet, NASA Team, Aurora Institute's Annual Symposium, and The Mastery Based Learning Collaborative events in coordination with the Great School's Partnership (6.1; 6.3; 6.4)
