Outcome 1: Be compassionate and kind.

  1. Be aware of and appreciate one’s similarities and differences with others.

  4. Express emotions, thoughts and impulses in positive and beneficial ways.

Goal

Goal:
Based on the data provided from the BHES student survey and using the following resources throughout the year: Second Step, Second Step Bullying Prevention Program, targeted social skills groups, and the Mentor Program for BIPOC students, students will show 25% growth from the fall survey on questions 3, 7, 8, 10, and 11 to the spring survey on the same questions.

  • Students will participate in BHES Survey in late fall 2022, winter 2023 and spring of 2023.
  • Students will participate in the BHES Student Survey  
  • Each classroom teacher will teach the Second Step curriculum and the Second Step Bullying Prevention Program in its entirety.
  • Counselor and support staff including paraeducators will hold both targeted small group social skills sessions and drop in sessions for lunch buddies focusing on interpersonal skills and compassion.  
  • Family liaisons at each building will reach out to students and families to provide support in partnership with counselors and principals
  • Monthly character trait assemblies will be held

Outcome 2: Have the academic and life skills to pursue their individual career, civic and educational goals.

  1. Read, write and speak effectively for a wide range of purposes, including the interpretation and analysis of both literary and informational texts.

Goal

K- 2nd Grade
ELA Goal: 
By implementing a variety of supportive instructional practices, such as focused small groups, building routines with families through Book-in-a-Bag, providing resources and access to books in home languages, and ongoing assessments, by May 2023 at least 75% of K-2 students will meet or exceed end of year grade level expectations. Student achievement data will reflect the equitable distribution of outcomes across lines or race and ethnicity.

Math Goal:
By implementing a variety of supportive instructional practices, such as turn and talks, workplaces, 1-on-1 and/or small group instruction, communicating with families through home connections and a unit overview in home languages, and ongoing assessments by May 2023 at least 75% of K-2 students will meet or exceed end of grade level expectations. Student achievement data will reflect the equitable distribution of outcomes across lines or race and ethnicity.

3rd- 5th Grade
ELA Goal:
When given a variety of reading supports and instructional practices, 75% of 3rd-5th grade students will meet or exceed benchmark growth goals on the MAP growth assessment and Wonders Benchmark Fluency and Comprehension checks.  Data will be disaggregated by subgroup to ensure that the instructional supports and practices are a strong fit for all students.  

Math Goal:
When given a variety of math supports and instructional practices, 75% of 3rd-5th grade students will meet or exceed benchmark growth goals on the MAP growth assessment and Bridges end of unit assessments.  Data will be disaggregated by subgroup to ensure that the instructional supports and practices are a strong fit for all students.  

Science Goal:
When given a variety of science supports and instructional practices, 75% of 3rd-5th grade students will meet or exceed Foss end of unit assessments.  Data will be disaggregated by subgroup to ensure that the instructional supports and practices are a strong fit for all students.  

Action Plan

Action Plan:
  • Academic screeners will take place in the fall to provide baseline data
  • MAP assessments will take place in late fall, winter and spring
  • Classroom differentiation and small group intervention groups will be formed based on classroom-based assessments and MAP data targeting students below grade-level standards and approaching grade-level standards
  • Use of Concept Quest and Beast Academy for differentiation in math. 
  • Special Education and General Education collaboration with a focus on IEP Accommodation in the general education classroom
  • Teachers will work with Science TOSA for support as needed.
  • Instructional practices include but are not limited to turn and talks, 1-on-1 and small group instruction, LAP small group support, Reading & Writing Workshop, ongoing formative assessments, and ongoing summative assessments.
  • Collaborative goal setting during fall and spring conferences with student, teacher, and families.
  • Participation in environmental learning through South Sound Green, The Puget Sound Estuarium, OSPI Science Integration Cadre, and outdoor school.

Outcome 3: Advocate for the social, physical and mental wellness of themselves and others and be hopeful about the future.

  1. Communicate effectively.
  2. Develop knowledge and skills to have healthy eating habits, have a healthy body image and access reliable health information and services.
  3. Be physically active and see athletics and exercise as health-enhancing behaviors.
  4. Understand and apply principles of sound mental and emotional health and learn to identify signs of emotional health concerns such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thinking in self and others.
  5. Understand how and when to seek supportive mental and emotional health resources for self and others.
  6. Cultivate healthy relationships that honor each person's personal preferences and boundaries.
  7. Identify and develop personal strengths and interests.
  8. Develop the skills and habits to assess the role of technology and social media in their lives and distinguish between healthy and harmful use.

  • Teachers will teach and use self regulation strategies (zones of regulation, calm down corner, relaxation techniques, positive self talk, classroom meetings, Second Step lessons/ language) in the classroom
  • Family liaison will partner with school counselor, Tier 2 Teams, BHR, and other local community based resources to support the mental health and well being of students
  • Behavior Technicians will continue to use CICO (check in, check out) system
  • All elementary teacher-librarians will use Developing Digital Detectives to teach Digital Citizenship to students in grades K-5.

Outcome 4: Have the skills, knowledge and courage to identify and confront personal, systemic and societal bias.

Goal

Goal:
In partnership with BHS families, including classroom equity reading and mini lessons, messaging in classroom and school newsletters and offering an equity focused book study with our instrucional coach, there will be an increase of 15% of  families responding favorably, from 54% in the fall to 69% in the spring on the question relating to students learning about, discussing and confronting issues of race, ethnicity and culture in school. This will be measured by the Panorama Survey in the cultural awareness and action section by late spring of June 2023.

Action Plan:
  • Equity Teams meet routinely throughout the year in order to address site specific needs.
  • Families will participate in the OSD Panorama SEL Survey in late fall 2021 and late spring of 2022.
  • Land acknowledgments will be added to morning announcements
  • Teachers provide opportunities for class discussions when events arise in the community related to major news events and will communicate topics of conversations with families.
  • Continue to diversify library collections to better represent all students and cultures. 
  • Principal, Principal Intern and family liaison will offer equity-focused read-alouds in classrooms on a monthly basis, with a different focus each month
  • 4th and 5th-grade students will participate in the Spring CBA 
  • Teachers will teach grade level Since Time Immemorial curriculum
  • Offer an equity-focused book study for BHES families in the late winter/early spring of 2023

Outcome 5: Discover their passions, be curious and love learning.

  1. Broaden their perspectives and seek out various opportunities to explore new ideas, particularly those areas that are unfamiliar or uncomfortable to find their interests.

Goal

Goal:
    100% of grade levels will have the opportunity to participate in a service project by June 2023. If any of these occur outside of the school day, we will ensure that all students are able to participate, regardless of transportation or other barrier.

  • Schools/Grade levels/teachers choose at least one service project to complete during the year.  
  • Work in partnership with families and community members to complete service project(s)
  • Highlight and celebrate examples of students providing service
  • 4th and 5th grade Junior Bear Crew leaders will research and help to organize a variety of service projects during the school year.

Goal

Goal: 
By June of 2023, 100% of students at Boston Harbor Elementary School will contribute to their local, global and natural world through school activities, field trips and curriculum. This will be accomplished by having students solve real world problems that relate to the environment.
